MAIN TRUNK SMASH.
GOODS TRAIN HITS STOP. WRECKAGE FALLS ON PASSING EXPRESS. Pm Press Association. TAIHAPE, December 6. A mishap occurred on the railway ibout seven miles north of Taihape, whereby a guard was severely injured. »«veral waggons were smashed. and minor damages were caused to the Alain Trunk express. A goods traSi leaving Taihape at eleven last night was compelled to cross the goods train from the north at Ngaurukehu. The Taihape train hacked into a siding, which was not long enough to accommodate it. and the guard's van forcibly struck the stops and. with several waggons. toppled down fifteen feet on to the main line. The guard, J. M’Carthy. who was In the van, was injured, and was taken later in n special train to Taihape, where he was admitted to hospital. The line was cleared to permit the express, due at- Taihape at 6.80 this morning, to pass the engine and van. While passing the express shook down the wreckage, which struck a passenger car, smashing the windows and splintering the woodwork along half its length. Luckily no personal Jniury was inflicted.
The express arrived at Taihape an hour late.
