The Berlin correspondent of the “ Daily Chronicle” says: ‘‘The first response to Herr Ebert’s proclamation came from the leaders ot the Democratic. Centre, and Social Democratic parties, who conferred with Dr Stresemann upon the advisability of enroll ing the youthful upholders of the republic for voluntary service hut eventually decided against the scheme. “• Dr Stresemann expressed eomplete confident in the Reichwehr’s 'loyalty to the Republic. “ Nevertheless, the Democratic party I issued an appeal stating that conspiraI tors were threatening internal peace. 1 and maintenance of constitutional conditions in Germany and the Repuhli- [ cans and Democrats would sec to it that such attacks were broken. If the Government found it necessary to strengthen the army or police for the protection of the Republic, all Demo crats trained to arms would be expected to answer the *-all. “ The-Social Democrats also broadcasted an appeal declaring that those who had not recognised that conspirators were determined to fight, were hiding their heads in sands.
