Mr Edward Richard Holton, who died suddenly last Thursday at the age of seventy-eight, was one of Cheviot’s earliest and most respected settlers. He arrived from England about thirty years ago and drew a farm in the first Cheviot ballot in the Jed Valley. He also acted as the first Cheviot County Clerk for a number of years and took an active interest in the affairs of the district and a keen interest in sport. He leaves two sons and one daughter, Mrs T. Gee. who is at present on a trip to England with her husband.
