ASHBURTON GALA.
LARGE CROWD OF VISITORS (By Special ‘‘ Star ” Reporter.) The monster gala promoted by the Advance Ashburton. Association with ihc object of raising additional funds for the beautification of the town is being held :n the Ashburton Domain to-day under extremely favourable conditions. From all parts of the extensive Ashburton County, and from Christchurch, Timaru and other places visitors have arrived in large numbers, and with almost the entire population of the town and suburbs arc spending the day in the picturesque domain. Proceedings commenced with a procession, which started from the corner cf .Moore and East Streets at 10 a.m The First Canterbury Mounted Rifles Band led the procession, which included the Ashburton Volunteer Eire Brigade with full equipment, the Ashburton County Pipe Band and many decorated motor-cars, motor-cycles, cycles, tradesmen’s displays and industrial exhibits. The centre- of the attractions for the gala is the splendidly appointed athletic ground, which has a large grandstand and an excellent cycling track. This portion of the. domain resembles a canvas town. Many tents have been elected for side shows, stalls and refreshments. The list of side shows and other attractions includes “ Hay Wallop ’ or ‘‘Slide for Life,” Gipsy fortune teller, concerts, mock court, surprise packet competitions, howling game, ice cream stall, lollies, soft drinks and toys, luncheon and afternoon tea tents, and a meat stall where thirty-three carcases of mutton (donated by export firms and farmers) are being sold. A comprehensive programme of running. cycling and Highland dancing events is being conducted, and the children are catered for by a special programme of races.
To-night the gala will be continued The grounds will be lit by electricity and dancing on the lawn will be indulged in.
