LABOUR DAY.

FINE WEATHER IN CITY. RUSH FOR THE BEACHES. Sunny weather, typical of early summer rather than of spring, induced many thousands of people to leave the city to-day in holiday attire, to enjoy a general cessation of labour on Labour Day. The recognised holiday resorts were the main attraction. New Brighton seemed to he the greatest favourite, hut Sumner and the Hills were j at remised liberally. Many holiday-seekers to the Hills took the train to the terminus and spent- very pleasant hours near the Takahe Rest-house, hut parlies walked to Victoria Park and also on to the Kiwi. There was record traffic on the trams for a Labour Day. The principal public gathering was at Sockburn. where a motor-racing carnival was held, in the presence of a large crowd. Amongst other gathering in Canterbury were the opening <f the yachting season at Lyttelton, the opening of the Power-boat Club’s season at New Brighton, a gala at Ashburton, atheletic meetings at Omihi and Southbriclge.. and a domain fete at Geraldine. There was also a racemeeting at- Ranigora.
