TRAIN CRASHES INTO RIVER
VICTIMS TRAPPED IN CARRIAGES.
e RIVER BRIDGE IN AMERICA GIVES WAY. Ay Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.—Aus. and IsT.Z. Cable Assn. (Received September 29, 8.45 a.m.) NEW YORK. September 28. A survivor from the railway disaster at Casper describes the sudden overturning of the coach in which he was sitting: with a score of others, unconscious of the river’s proximity and the weakened bridge under them. The train settled in the river’s ooze within a few seconds. He escaped from the window and swam until a rope was thrown by the engine-driver on the bank. The darkness, rain, and torrential current confused the victims. Some could be heard screaming for help. A few sat on the end of an overturned parlour car while it slowly sank into the riverbed and the waters closed over them. Four other coaches were never visible to the survivors after the fall.
It is estimated that a hundred and twenty-five persons were aboard, but only twenty-five were discoverable four hours later.
