OTIRA TUNNEL.
“ NO SERIOUS DELAY.” Inquiries have been made by business men as to whether the block on the Midland line will hold up the work of installing the Otira tunnel ivith electrical equipment and preparing the track between Arthur’s Pass and Otira for passenger and goods traffic. Departmental officials state that m> serious interference would be caused by the slips between Springfield and the Bealey, and that work v.»>; proceeding in the tunnel. Railway Department representatives point out that, though Arthur’s Pass is cut off from Christchurch, it is in direct communication with Greymouth and any ordinary supplies required can be secured from that end. There is still a quantity of equipment at Addington awaiting despatch to the tunnel mouth, but so far there has been no information to the effect that it is required urgently. If word of that kind does come through every effort will be made to send it on, even if carts have to be requisitioned at the stretch where the Midland line is out of commission. Officials of the Public Works and Railway Departments agree that there is no ground for alarm on account of any hold-up in tho tunnel installation work
