FLOOD LOSSES.

A ROUGH ESTIMATE. (Special to the “Star.”) AY ELLINGTON. May 9. Telegrams hare been -pouring in upon the Minister of Public Works from local bodies who have suffered through floods in Marlborough and Canterbury. From these indications the Public Works Department’s officers, who know the cost of the principal bridges and other public works throughout the Dominion. have advised Mr Coates that already flood damage to roads and bridges in Marlborough and Canterbury may be roughly assessed at £200.000. The Minister has given instructions that district Public Works engineers should inspect the flood areas when this becomes practicable so as to secure a more authentic estimate of ihe amount required for replacements. Local bodies will It© expected to bear a share of the cost and the Government will sympathetically consider requests for special grants.
