HARPOON GUN TO SHOOT WIRES OVER RIVERS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 0. In consequence of the breakdown of the telegraph wires at Clarence' River communication between AA'ellington and Christchurch has had to be maintained via Westport. •* In reply to inquiries the PostmasterGeneral, Hon J. G. Coates, stated that a quadruple duplex telegram printing machine, capable of taking five hundred messages an hour, is being installed between AA'ellington and Christchurch; via Blenheim, Tophouse, Glenhope and Greymouth. The Superintending Engineer of Telegraphs. Mr E. A. Shrimpton, left for Nelson by the AA'ainui to see to matters on the spot, and local engineers have been instructed to get the work of repair in hand as soon as possible. Four linesmen from Wellington were landed at Kaikoura yesterday by the Wakatu with instructions to repair the telegraph lines between Kaikoura and the Clarence River bridge. Another gang has lelt Wellington for Blenheim to work from the north until they meet the gang working.up Irorn Kaikoura. A harpoon gun was also landed at Tvaikoura yesterday. *lt will be used to shoot the telegraph lines across the rivers. It is considered possible that telegraph connection between Kaikoura and Bleu heim will be available by Saturday.
