The state of lawlessness in the Ruhr as the result of the abolition of armed police i« vividly illustrated by an incident at Bochum. A detective pursuing two thieves, was shot in the abdomen, after which his assailants fled, one taking refuge in the burgomaster’s house. He later appeared on the roof, from where he repeatedly fired on the crowd. The police were powerless and the Fire Brigade were summoned, but before tbe driver could alight he was shot dead. The house was eventually surrounded and the criminal, finding escape impossible, committed suicide. The second thief was captured.
