SURF CLUB. The North Beach Surf Club held tinfirst of a series of winter card matches on Saturday evening last. PEACE M EMOIMAL. The (-ala Committee circularised tlie candidates for the Borough Council with reference to the request of the committee, for a lease of a site for the Peace Memorial. Two replies were received against the proposal, and one candidate did not reply. The remainder were favourable or promised favourable consideration. Only one candidate who declared himself against th.e proposal was elected. In spite of the emphatic denial by the committee to tlie statement that it was intended to use the premises for trading purposes, some persons persist in the accusation. , BOROUGH ELECTION. Owing to the fact that there was no AJ ay oral election the interest in the election of councillors was not so- great as on previous occasions. The United Burgesses’ Association infused a little life into tlie contest by inducing some new blood to stand. Three of the six nominated by the association were eelotcd. At tlie meeting at the Pier Hall oh Tuesday evening considerable merriment was created by the ringing oil' of tlie speakers at the time limit, i.e., five minutes, and later at tlie attempt of a ratepayer to deliver an ovation, the speaker being laughed down. PERSONAL. Airs AA . H. Leverett and Master Bertie Leverett returned on Tuesday from a holiday spent at Hastings. Air J. B. Broom]lead, who lias been : i hospital, has returned to his home io Osborne Terrace, and is making steady progress. Mr William Brew has come to live uith his daughter at North Beach. Mr and Airs F. .T. Lawrence Scott and family, of Jubilee Avenue, have gone t-o reside at Cashmere Hills for six months.
