FIRE AT WAIROA.
HOTEL, THEATRE AND ' SHOPS DESTROYED. (Per Press Associations) WAIROA, April 27. One of the most disastrous fires in the history of the occured early this morning, resulting in the complete destruction of the Wairoa Hotel, Everybody’s Theatre and two shops, with dwelling attached. The Duco garage adjoining, was saved by an improvised bucket brigade. There was no water or a supply of fire-fighting appliances Fortunately there was a southerly w ind, otherwise much greater damage must have resulted. The hotel boarders, including Chief Judge Jones of the Native Land Court, Mi Levy, S.M. t and several commercial travellers had narrow' escapes, losing practically everything and escaping in their nightclothes. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it is thought that it started in a small storeroom of tile hotel upstairs. A boarder named Mrs Hook fell clown a fire escape sustaining a spraiued ankle. -Two boarders received a scorching, their hands being badly burned. The insurances are not available.
