BOOM CANTERBURY.
PROGRESS LEAGUE'S REFORT. The campaign of Canterbury public--1 ity initiated a few weeks ago by the Canterbury Progress League, forms L-he subject of a brief report prepared for the executive of the league. A feature that is emphasised at the outset, is the unanimity of the people j of Christchurch and the district gener- ! ally as to the desirability of a more I persistent and more vigorous publicity : campaign. The league issued the appeal to business firms and the public ’ to support it by subscribing to a special fund, the purpose of which is to make the province and its attractions better known within the Dominion an,d abroad. The response, so far, is described as being wonderfully generous. Not one per cent of the business firms approached declined to contribute, and in every case the subscription, whether large or small, was given g»adlv. and with a tribute to the- excellent work of the league in this direction, i The first object aimed at by the ! league in its publicity effort was to at- : tract as many people as possible in other parts of the Dominion to make ' Christchurch and Canterbury their holiday resort this summer, especially ; during the period of the Exhibition. With this objfect in view, quarter-page ; advertisements were inserted in the leading metropolitan newspapers, seti ting forth the special attractions of the • province. In anticipation of the invi- ! tation being widely accepted, the league • set itself the task of organising and compiling all the available accommoda- | tion and publishing it, in convenientform, for distribution throughout the j various offices of the Tourist. Depart- | ment. Judging by the manner in which ! this information has been sought after Canterbury is to have the pleasure of • entertaining a record number of visitj ors during the present holiday season. • But the Progress League is aiming J at a more permanent scheme of worldwide publicity, and in this connection . is publishing a number of well-prepar-{ed illustrated folders or booklets of ' pocket size, and these are to be distrib- | uted throughout New Zealand • and abroad by means of the various j tourist offices, railway and shipping j companies, public libraries, and other ! suitable distributing agencies. One of ! these booklets is entitled. “ A holidai' - S in Canterbury, New Zealand ” and con- | tains a complete list of places to see, j and how to get there. The booklet ■ will be provided with a relief map of the province—a most artistic production—which shows the various holiday resorts, and other interesting features, while a plan of the Christchurch tramJ way system is also provided. Another of the league’s booklets at present being published is entitled ‘ In Canterbury With Rod and Gun.” which contains a complete list of the fishing i streams and lakes and shooting grounds, and other information pertaining to both branches of sport. An illustrated map of the province is provided, showing the towns, hotels, rivers, lakes, roads, railways and shooting grounds. It is the intention df the league to issue quite a number of these booklets and keep up a continuous supply of them.
