SMOKE CONCERT.
BILLIARDS ASSOCIATION FUNCTION. The Canterbury Billiards Association held its second annual smoko concert at the Foresters' Hall last evening. Mr C O’Donnell presided over a very large attendance, including representatives from the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club, and an enjoyable time was spent. Mr O’Donnell, in his opening remarks, said that the association had had a very good year - , and lie thought it fitting that the billiard season in Christchurch should he closed with a smoke concert. Mr J. Cooper, in proposing the toast of ‘ Billiards.'’ said that billiards was a very fine game, and was undoubtedly one cf skill. The better side of man’s nature was brought out by the game. All present were pleased to see that a member of the Native race, Mr Karaitiana. had won the Canterbury championship. Mr W. Smith responded to the toast, of “ The Christchurch Billiards Association," referred to the good work done by the association during the past year, lie expressed the hope that Canterbury would he represented at the next Now Zealanl c h a mpi on s h ips. Mr C- O'Donnell, president of the association. in response, said that the association was only a young one, but it * had done good work, and bad a great future before il After responding. Mr O’Donnell pre seqied Billiards, Ltd.’s, shield for the Canterbury amateur championship to the Kaiapoi Working Mens Club, its representative. W. Kaxaitiana, having won the championship. Mr Karaitiana also received a gold medal. The Returned Soldiers' Association billiard team, comprising W. Smith (captain), H. M’Lean. R. C. Butters. H. Ritchie and H. M’Kay, having won the league interclub competition, were presented with an enlarged framed photograph of the team and the Lutjohann Cup. Messrs W. Karaitiana and W. Smith replied. Mr O’Donnell proposed the toast of “ The Prize Donors, Billiards, Ltd., and Lutjohann, Ltd." Mr Holderness, representing Billiards. Ltd., said that Billiards. Ltd!, had preeented their shield for competition solely for the purpose of encouraging billiards in Christchurch, and, in his opinion, had not done badly. Other toasts honoured were “ The Chairman ” and “ The Press." During the evening musical items were rendered by Messrs Booth Bros., T. Cooper A. Tongue. Gibbs. Lovatt, W. Bischlayer, Berry, J. Fraser. Howell and Laurenson.
