A tragedy that occured over nine mouths ago at Clifton. Sumner, in re-

called by tlie arrest of Wm. Theodors Thompson, alias JO. T. Scott, at Auckland. the husband of a woman who was found asphyxiated at Sumner with her daughter. The police at Christchurch this morn ing received a telegram stating that Thompson had been arrested on a war rant issued at Wharigarei. He had been remanded to appear there on November 21 Thompson i< also wanted at Dunedin for failing to comply with tlie conditions of his release ou

probation. On January 8 of this year. -Janet Scott anti her eight-year'old chil \ Gladys were found in a house ill Victoria Terrace. Clifton- Hill, having n\ parently been asphyxiated by gas. Atthe inquest live days later there were rather sensational developments. Tim evidence disclosed that Scottj who had not appeared in Christchurch since tho tragedy, had passed himself off as lieutenant-colonel, a member of the Secret Service and a member of th ■ Canterbury Club, and that his uil • believed him to be the most decorated man in New Zealand. The missing husband, according to evidence given, claimed that lie was Tueut.-Colonel Scoft. D. 5.0.. a shipmate of * Lieut. Holbrook. V.C.„ of submarine 8.11. which went through the Dardanelles. Scott had produced receipts purporting to show that he bail "aid out thousands of pounds in connection with the Defence Department.
