HYDRO-ELECTRICITY.
STATEMENT 8Y MINISTER. THE THREE BIG KEY STATIONS. (.Special to tho “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, September 26. Tho Minister of Public "Works made an important statement to a deputation on the subject of local, as opposed to national, of hydroelectric development. “We have gone int-o the thing very thoroughly,” said Air Coates, “and we cannot consider anything but the policy of tlie three big key stations. We cannot go back on that- plan. All the argument is entirely in favour of the larger schemes. It may bo more expensive for the first twenty years, but it is undoubtedly tlie best for the future.” The Afinister added that he was restricted in hydro-electric expenditure to £1.000.000 annually, and lie bad to consider commitments, and had to work each scheme in with the other. There had been uo delay at WaikareAloana, in which the deputation was interested, and the machinery to develop 1000 horse-power would be running in a few weeks. Of the £BO,OOO expended more than half had been on rood-making. This would enable the heavier machinery to be trausportei when needed.
