Steffansson, the Arctao explorer, to-dny. More than a year ago several Canadians sailed for W'rangr'l Island, off the coast of Siberia, for the purpose ot claiming .t under the British flag. The history ol the island shows that the flags of the United States and Great Britain have been planted there several times during the past sixty years. A brief message arrived >ome time ago announcing the party’s arrival at Wrangel Island. Then came a. call for relief. Mr Steffa n .-.son sent a schooner, the Teddy Bear, to rescue the party, whovse vessel appeared to have been lost. 'Hie Teddy Bear sailed from Nome. Alaska, a month ago. and the message received to-day, relayed through Nome, reported that some r :berian reindeer herders saw the Teddy Bear trapped in the ice. Mr Steffansson expressed great anxiety regarding the fate of the Teddy Bear and her crew. He thought it might b© necessary to make an 800-mile sledge journey next February to rescue both the Teddy Bear’s crew and the Wrangel expedition.
