SHAKESPEARE.

THE ALLAN WILKIE SEASON The revival of Shakespeare’s plays by the Allan Wilkie Company has further proved to New Zealanders that it is no longer necessary to send to the Homeland for talent to portray successfully the characters originated by Shakespeare. Mr Allan Wilkie has a splendid company. Each actor is an artist-, and as far as Christchurch is concerned the true worth of his company and method of production have been appreciated. The first week of his season has now ended, and until next Friday, the closing night of the season, plays will be presented every night. To-night “ The Taming of the Slirew ” has been chosen. It is a comedy which, when compared with the type of comedy so prevalent to-day, emphasises the fact that without the ” slang” expressions of to-day, humour can exist. “ King John,” Mr ’Wilkie’s latest production, by special request, will be repeated on Monday night. “ Twelfth Night,” “ The Merchant of Venice, 1 ‘ A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a repetition of “ The Taming of the Shrew,” and “ Richard III.” will come- in order. The season finishes on Friday night, after a ,season of plays which have certainly fulfilled their purpose in bringing about a, revival of Shakespeare, has been witnessed in Christchurch.
