SOLDIERS’ HOMES.
I ♦ NEW SYSTEM OF ADVANCES. (Special to the ” Star.”) WELLINGTON, September 22. The amalgamation of the various branches of State lending activities under the State Advances Department will not interfere with former facilities for borrowing for • dwellings. This was the effect of a statement made by the Prime' ATinister to-day. The old system, under which a married workman of good character could obtain a dwelling on making a deposit of £lO, would be continued, the applicant being offered the choice of a section and the building being done under the department's supervision. “It is no use attemptin'’- to deceive Parliament,” added Air Afassey. *lt will be quite impossible for us to provide sufficient money for all applicants.” Air Alitcholl asked how would preference be given. The Prime ATinister replied that married men with families would receive first consideration. He went on to state that with regard to soldiers it had been suggested, and was probably being done, that the State Advances Department would advance threefourths of the sum required for a dwelling and the Repatriation Board would provide the remaining 25 per cent. A still more satisfactory scheme was being considered, but he was not yet in possession of details.
