AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

ANNUAL. MEETING OF CANTERBURY CLUB. The third annual meeting; of the Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club was hold last evening; iu the Pioneer Sports Club rooms. Mr A. Fj. Flower, president of the. club, occupied the chair. The annual report stated that the membership had increased considerably during’ the past twelve months, but more young members were required if the club wiahe l to maintain the high position attained last season on the running field. Free membership to the club was eriven to seven Technical College boys, who had been coach el by Mr C. J. Gold6tone, who had also assisted at the club’s fixtures. During the season evening meetings were held by the 2lub at Lancaster Park, and keen interest was displayed. The club held a big spring meeting at Lancaster Park on October 29, and, though the public did uot turu out in large numbers, the meeting was a success, large fields and good racing being the order of the day. The club was again successful in scoring most points at the Canterbury championships. It intended to again hold the three-mile harrier championship for the Harrier Cup, at present held by R. O. Page, of Canterbury College, also evening meetings, as last season. From every point of view, the club had had a most successful season, and the results on the running field went to show that the club was very fortunate iu possessing such brilliant runners as C. H. Taylor, half-mile Australasian champion, 440ycls and 880 yd-? New Zealand champion, and O- H. Goodman, who proved himself a runner of great promise, and was verv consistent throughout the season. It. is very gratifying to see that field events, previously at. a low ebb in Canterbury, were being brought, more before the public. Messrs C. 11. Taj - lor and S. Cox brought further honours to the club by their successful mission to the Australasian championships a.t Adelaide December last, Taylor winning the halfmile in lmin 58 l-ssec.. The club suffered a severe loss in the death of Mr C. S. liarits late president, and one of the jno6t enthusiastic and successful athletes

Canterbury had had. The work of the trainers and coaches plays a very important part in the success of a club, and special praise was due to Mr fiid. Cox for his untiring enthusiasm in training and advising the younger runners of the cluo and looking alter the Canterbury team at the New Zealand championships. Mr Flewellyn and other club members had done good work, too, in that connection. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £42 5s 6d. The appointment was left, in the hands of the committee. Mr S. Cox, a prominent member of the club and manager of various Canterbury and New Zealand athletic touring teams, forwarded his resignation as a member of the' club. Mr Flower said that Mr Cox’s action meant that the club would lose a valued and active member of the club, and it was a serious matter.
