STRIKES IN NOVA SCOTIA.
LABOUR PROTEST. AT PRESENCE OF MILITARY, By Telegraph—Press As&ocia t ion— Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. MONTREAL, August 22. The annual convention of the Dominion Trades Congress has telegraphed the Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, protesting against the presence of Canadian troops on tbe Nova Scotia coal fields, pointing out that the strike i b 100 per cent effective and can only be broken by military forces, which Labour rears is the intention of the Government. A previous message stated that as a result of a clash between the pickets of striking coal-miners at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, and volunteers to man the mine pumps, several persons were injured. The. strikers were victorious, and the mine officials were compelled to work the pumps themselves. The Minister of Defence, Air G. P. Graham, sent a detachment of several hundred troops to the scene of the disturbance upon a request from the mine officials. The Minister of Labour. Air James Murdoch, telegraphed to Mr John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers of America, asking him to appeal to the Nova Scotia miners to return to the pumps and continue negotiations with the Empire Steel Corporation, which owns the mines. The strike, which occurred on Monday over a reduction in wages. appeared to he of insignificant proportions until the miners deserted tbe primps.
