SUNDAY CONCERTS.
CLERGYMAN PROTESTS. The circumstances under which various charitable efforts, including Sunday concerts are held, were briefly referred to at last night’s meeting of the Council of Christian Congregations. The Rev J. J. North moved :—“ That this count il regrets that the organisers of certain charitable efforts should have infringed both civic and State laws in Christchurch recently. The council believes that good causes should be kept free from such infringements, the more so since obedieuce to law is toe first essential of social well-being. The council further regrets that the C ity Council should be proposing to license fixed charges for charitable enterprises on Sundays, and trusts that so retrograde a step, bristling with such practical difficulty, may be retracted.” The mover expressed regret that breaches of the Gaming Act were often committed •& functions held in aid of worthy charitable objects. Regarding Sunday concerts, he contended that good charities should be able to trust the public to respond liberally. Fixed charges tor concerts were objectionable on the day of rest.
