NORTH BEACH NOTES.

Through the activities of the Burgesses' Association and the kindly support of the Council, the scheme for planting a portion of the Fnplanade Reserve is now well in hand. The first instalment of 500 trees supplied by tho Forestry Department lias been planted aud the area fenced. This portion of the Borough Reserve is the only portion handy to the tram that has a frontage to the Esplanade, and it is pleasing to know that at last it is coming into its own. THE NORTH BEACH SCHOOL 1 Despite continual application to tho Education authorities both, by the New Brighton School Committee and tho Burgesses’ Association, to make a main School of the present establishment, so far nothing has been done. In view of the over-crowding difficulties at the Main School, one cannot understand the attitude of the Board in overlooking this easy way out of the- difficulty, especially when the urgent need of North Beach for a Main School is so patent to everybody. DOUBTFUL IMPROVEMENTS. The erection of what is presumably a, “ merry-go-round” in the centre of the residential area is causing much indignation. and alarm by numerous residents, who have visions of being awakened and indeed lulled off to sleep by the soothing melodies of a circus organ. PERSONAL. Miss Barbara Loughman and Miss Watson (Palmenston North) were the guests of Mrs B. B. Wood at Raybern House on Saturday. This was their first visit to Christchurch and they were particularly charmed by the beautiful beach. They hope to rc-visit North Beach at surfing time. BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of tho North Beach and Waimairi Burgesses’ Association was held in the Surf Club Pavilion on Monday. The tree planting committee reported that 500 young pine trees had been received from the Government Forestry Department. A working bee had been held on Saturday last, and all the trees were planted in the space allotted by the New Brighton Borough Council. The president and Mr A. R. Blank were appointed to represent the Association on the United Burgesses’ Association. Several members spoke of the nuisance caused by cattle and horses straying on the roads and it was resolved to write to the local bodies concerned and draw their attention to this matter.

LOAN WORK. There is general satisfaction expressed with the development taking place in the district, though a considerable amount of trouble has been experienced by many owners of properties in straightening the boundaries of their section*. The manuka fence—the good old friend of the North Beach pioneers—is now being replaced by more permanent structures. One must not forget the activities of the previous council in getting this loan through. Incidentally, had it not been for the heavy polling of the North, through the efforts of our Burgesses’ Association the loah would never have been carried. A definite promise was given by the last council that unformed roads at the North Beach would receive first consideration. The resident? of Jubilee Avenue, Government Road, and Pacific Street want to know why other parts of our district should be getting footpaths and side channels, and they not even a. track. PEACE MEMORIAL. Many inquiries are being made as to when a start will be made with this building. The Gala Committee are still waiting for the necessary permission of the Borough Council in relation to the site for the building. Why there should be any delay or reluctance to grant the site it is impossible to say. On Monday evening last the Borough Council referred the matter to the borough solicitor. * PUBLIC DRESSING SHEDS. Since the destruction by fire of the bathers’ dressing rooms on jthe Esplanade, a great deal of anxiety has been felt with reference to any convenience being provided for the coming season. The contract for the new building lias* now been let to Mr Hinkey. The building will provide accommodation for about 200 persons and it is to be completed by about the middle of October.

NEW SHOPS. New shops are to be erected on Bowhill Road adjoining the residence of Mr A. K. Hadfield. The buildings will he in brick. SOCIALS. The usual fortnightly euchre and dance connected with the ladies’ branch of the Surf Club will be held at the Racecourse on Wednesday evening next, and on the Wednesday following (30th) the ladies’ social committee will hold a gift social at the racecourse, the proceeds being devoted to a fancy stall at the North Beach Gala. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs A. K. Hadfield, of Bowhill Road, returned on Tuesday from a most pleasant and interesting trip to Fiji. Miss Edna Herrick left on Monday for a holiday trip to Auckland. During Miss Herrick’s absence, Mr Cunningham will take her place as dispensing chemist at North Beach. Mrs A. J. Cole ha? left for Greymouth. Mrs Cole will spend some time on the West Coast. North Beach now has a resident representative of the advertising department of this paper Advertisements for the “Star” or “ Lyttelton Times ” may b© left with Mr White, 52, Bowhill Road.
