Chief-Detective .Cameron said that ■ there were further charges pending against the accused, and he asked for j a remand until next Wednesday, j The remand was granted. A STOLEN BICYCLE, j Frank Burgess, alias Norman Winj wood (Mr W. J. Hunter), was charged ; that at Christchurch on April 18, he i stole a bicycle valued at £l2 10s, the property of Ernest Hugh Oldridge. Ernest Hugh Oldridge. mechanic, stated that on April 18. he left his cycle in the stand outside the Public Library, and when he came out it was gone. He identified the cycle last Friday at the Police Station. Jessie McKenzie, stated that she inserted an advertisement, in one of the papers for the purchase of a bicycle, and Burgess answered it. but before accepting delivery she rang up the Police to see if a cycle of the descripi tion was missing. Burgess told her that be had purchased the cycle, and he produced a receipt, but the number on the receipt was not identical with the one on the cycle offered to her. Burgess, giving evidence said that lie had been harvesting at Balfour in Southland, and when the job was finished he went up to Timaru and spent .*4 night there. He met a man named McKinnon from whom he purchased a bicycle for £l2 10s. He could not explain why he gave the name of Winwood instead of that of Burgess. The receipt he had for the sale of the cycle at Timaru was written out by McKin- | non.
