RESCUE OF FOUR MEN.

HOW IT WAS EFFECTED. (Pn Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 2. The explanation of the unexpectedly early rescue of the four men was that the Wiltshire’s crew succeeded in floating a line ashore, and, thus gained connection with tile land. The latest messages last night stated that a port of the Wiltshire was firmly fixed on the rocks, and that, presumably owing to the wind changing from east to north, and moderating, there is every reason for hoping that the night will not be one of great danger for the sailors, who are said to be quite comfortable in the forecastle. Why t.hc rescue operations were suspended for the night is not. explained, but the reason may be that the method used for bringing ashore the four men was dangerously primitive. Tile skilled life-savers of H.M.S. Philomel will have up-to-dato gear on the scene this morning. WEATHER BOISTEROUS. A message from Tryphena at 10.30 p.m., stated that although the wind had moderated, the weather was still boisterous, with scattered showers, and that, in any case, the effect of the easterly gale would he felt for some days rocket apparatus. PROVISION IN PRINCIPAL PORTS URCED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 2. A brief .service of sympathy and intercession for the Wiltshire s crew was held at the Sailors’ Friendly Society’s rooms. Afterwards the meeting carried a resolution urging that rocket apparatus should be provided in at least the four principal ports and in others if possible, in the interests of seamen who may be in distress on the roekbound coasts.
