RESCUING THE WILTSHIRE’S CREW.

Men Being Hauled Ashore One by One. Work Expected to Take All Day. By Telegraph -Press Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WELLINGTON, June 2 (11.20 a.m.) The Secretary of the General Post Office has received the following advice from the postmaster at Coromandel:— “ Darkness and the awful conditions prevented further rescues from the Wiltshire last night. Operations were commenced at daylight, and the crew are being hauled ashore one by one. It is expected that it will take all day to complete the rescue. It is reported that no lives have been lost.” (Per Pkbss Association.) AUCKLAND, June 2. A “ Star ” reporter wires as follows from Tryphena (Great Barrier Island), at 7 a.m.:—“ After the four men were landed from the Wiltshire the work of rescue was suspended owing to nightfall just when, by the efforts of the Katoa’s party, the settlers were enabled to get in communication with the wreck. It is believed that the line was floated ashore from the Wiltshire and secured by the men ashore. This was followed by getting aboard the Wiltshire an endless rope. After several hours’ work the first man was rescued. He was followed by three others, but owing to the terrible stormy conditions and night setting in the work of rescue was interrupted. Ninety-nine men remain on the vessel. A party from the Katoa landed at 7 o’clock this morning and are making their way over a rugged track to the wreck. They are travelling as light as possible, and are under the guidance of the Barrier settlers. They have a strenuous job before them.”.
