NEWS FROM NEAR AND FAR A children’s library has been established by the Palmerston North Borough Council, and the first thousand hooks have been purchased. Chaplain-Captain James Wilson, member of the Legislative Assembly ; for New South Wales, who is on a visit to Christchurch, which is practically his native city, will preach tomorrow night at the Cambridge Terrace Methodist Church. Captain Wilson, who has been away from New Zealand for twelve years, was formerly minister in connection with the East Street Hall Methodist Mission in Auckland. Bv an Order-in-Council gazetted yesterday, that portion of the Timber Trade Regulations which fixes maximum prices is revoked. This means that Government control of timber prices is at an end. It was instituted when there was a shortage of timber, and, therefore, lack of keenness in competition. Now there is no shortage, and competition has revived. Under such circumstances, it is held. price regulation is unnecessary, and may even be harmful, since it may tend to keep prioes at an artificial and arbitrary level.
