ANZAC DAY.

TO THE EDITOR Sir, I notice by an advertisement in to-night’s “Star” that all the train services, with the exception of those on the Christchurch-Lyttelton line are to be cut out on Anzac Day, thus further inconveniencing the general public at a time when the trains should be running at full pressure. I understand also that the newspapers will not be published on that day, that all theatres will he closed, and that no fixtures will be allowed excepting memorial services. Is this not going too far? Legislation can do a great- deal but it can't make people feel solemn and sorrowful if they don’t want to. And why should not Anzac Day be made a day of rejoicing instead of a day of gloom and misery? It was a day when great sacrifices were made, but not in -vain, and we should rejoice that those sacrifices were a stepping stone to ultimate victory. Instead,- however, a gloom will set over the city on Tuesday next and because of the compulsory goodness forced on them, a large number of people may feel far from reverent. —I am, etc. DIGGER.
