THE MEMORIAL BRIDGE.
PLANS AWAITING APPROVAL. Plans and specifications for the Bridge of Remembrance war memorial were brought to Christchurch this morning by Mr Gummer, of Prouse and Gummer, the designers of the bridge. The plans will l>e considered by the subcommittee of the City Council, but it is not likely that a report will be prepared in time for next Monday’s meeting of the council. When the plans are approved by the council tenders for the work will be called in the four centres, and it is anticipated that ijjie bridge will be completed in twelve months. A facing of New Zealand marble will be used on the bridge and arch. This material will cost no more than the stone originally provided for. The Memorial Committee will find the money for the arch and bridge, and the City Council will find the money for the understructure of the. bridge, spreading a vote of £IO,OOO over five years. When tenders are called, an estimate will be given of the cost of each section of the work. The lions that will form an important feature of the arch may form the subject of a separate competition among sculptors, and the Memorial Committee may require further money for this purpose.
