ATHLETICS.

EVENING MEETING POSTPONED. The evening meeting to have been controlled by the High School Old Boys’ Club and held yesterday was postponed with the consent of the centre until Tuesday, January 24, when the programme will consist of three handicap events, a 75yds, a 250yds and a 600yds. The South African athletes will be in Christchurch the whole of January 23, and it is expected that they will compete in all three events. ST PATRICK'S SPORTS ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the St Patrick’s Sports Association was held last evening in the Hibernian Hail, Mr B. M’Keuna presiding over an attendance of twenty-five members. The chairman, in his opening remarks, moved a hearty vote of congratulation to C. H. Taylor and R. M. Webber on their fine performances at the Australasian championships. Mr C. H. Taylor, sen., thanked the meeting on behalf of his sou. Considerable correspondence was received, including letters from Messrs J/ Kidd, D. F. M’Kay (Otago Centre), W. C. Miller, C. F. Barnes and P. Bradley, regarding receipt of programmes. Dr P. Ardagh and Messrs D. G. Sullivan, M.P., H. J. Suckling. C. S. Thomas and J. K. Hayward wrote accepting office to the association. Correspondence was alßo dealt with from the secretaries of the Otago, Poverty Bay and North Otago Centres, and also from the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union. A letter acknowledging receipt of a medal for the heavy-weight championship was received from Mr Richard Muason. The chairman eulogised the work of tho secretary, Mr J. M. Coffey, who replied briefly. Reporting on the SouUi Canterbury Caledonian Sports, Mr Coffey stated that the St Patrick’s Association had little to learn from Timaru, the only point on which the southern meeting excelled the Christchurch fixture being in the matter of the cycling track. In connection with the £5 promised by Mr P. C. Crook as a prize for a cycling road race, it was decided to hold the race on February 18, over a twenty miles track. Mr G. Hayward’s motion that the association Bhould supplement the prize by another £5. making the first award £lO in all, was carried unanimously. Mr Hayward also offered (on behalf of Hayward Bros.) a Bet of North British cycle tyres as a second priez for the ralce. A suggestion was made that the race should consist of a hill-climbing contest, but it was finally decided to hold it over a course between the Conner of Marshland Road, Shirley Road, to Kaiapoi, going there and back. With regard to the charges of admission to Lancaster Park and for programmes on March 17 and 18, it was resolved that the association should pay the tax, the price of admission being: Stand 2s, embankment Is, programmes Is. The advertisements arrangements were left in the bands of Messrs H. O’Connor and B. M’Konna. The chairman reported that Mr G. M. Ryan had promised the association a donation of £2O, and that Mr Hayward and a few other members of late had been energetically arranging an amateur sports meeting at the St Joseph’s Orphanage, Middleton, the meeting to take place next Saturday, at 2 p.m. Fifty new members. Mr H. O’Connor nominating no fewer than thirty-four, were elected. In moving a vote of thanks to the Press representatives for attendance, the chairman drew particular attention to the athletic columns appearing in the “ Star ** and to the fine hearing given to all sports bodies. The next meeting will bo held on January 31.
