UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
PROPOSAL TO PLANT LUCERNE. A proposal to provide work for unemployed by planting reserves in lucerne was placed before the City Council last evening by Messrs H. H. Holland, VV. Goss, A. Macpherson and C. Benjamin, representing the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee. Mr Macpherson said that certain reserves belonging to the council could be utilised for the purpose of producing food for horses and providing work lor unemployed. The areas could be cleared now, the surface could be tilled, and next year they could have lucerne crops. Mr Goss said that what was wantec was to get men employed on work thai was productive. Lucerne was a valuable plant for fodder, and everything done towards its growth would he o: benefit to the community. Lucerni belts round plantations would act a: fire breaks, and in that way alone gooc must result. Answering questions, Mr Macpher son said that lucerne gave splendid re suits on sandhills, and the Te Orangf site would be quite suitable, or the re serve next to it. Tn discussing the matter raised In the deputation, Councillor K. IT. An drews said that the Reserves Commit tee might consider the use of mud of the unplanted land not subject tc leases. He moved accordingly. Councillor F. R. Cooke seconded tin motion. Councillor J. IC. Archer suggestor that unemployed might be engaged i? clearing the section at the corner o Wordsworth and Queen Streets. The motion was carried.
