A race-week warning was given at last night’s meeting of th© executive of the South Island Motor Union. It was reported that many local bodies throughout Canterbury intended to strictly enforc© speed limit by-laws against visiting motorists going through to Christchurch, and that special traffic inspectors had been appointed in various townships. At the eleventh annual meeting of the local branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants Messrs W. E. Best and J. IV. Morrison addressed the meeting on th© work done by the council during the past year. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year:—Messrs C. Buchanan, R. F. Sutherland, J. S. Day. 11. T. Whittingham and H. M’lira ith. It was recommended that the com4nittee arrange to hold an annual dinner. Applications for licenses to stalk in the Rakaia deer forest and in the Pointer River district closed with the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society on Tuesday. A total of forty-six applications were received. In some cases tho applicants, in the case of their offer for the Rakaia failing, have put in applications for the Poulter River district. There are nineteen blocks in the Rakaia deer forest, and seven blocks in the Poulter River district available. The ballot by the Deer Committee of the society will take place about November 21. A meeting of the General Committee of the Canterbury branch of tho Navy League was held last night; present— Messrs H. J. Marriner (chairman), C. E. Bevan-Brown, A. Ferguson. T. Foster; Mesdames WiTsdn, Banker andRobinson, Misseg Sanders and Macbeth. It was recommended that a sum should be given to the Sea Scout movement in Canterbury for the purchase of boats. A vote of thanks was passed in recognition of the helpers’ work on Nelson Day and Navy Day. It wns decided to entertain these hdoers at a social evening after th© next general meeting. The R ecretarv reported that fourteen letters had been received from the various school committees. Nine were sympathetic and five hostile, the hostile ones had been suitably replied toThe fortnightly meeting of the Canterbury Repatriation Board was held on Wednesday evening: uresent— Messrs F. W. Hobbs (in the chair). H. S. J. Goodman, W. Goss and W. E. Lead ley. An apology was received from Mr A. F. Drayton. Applications were received and dealt with as follow : Furniture—Applications received 23, approved 15, declined 8. Trades, tools and equipment—Applications received 17, approved 8, declined 4, held over 5. Educational and vocational—-Appli-cations received 6, approved 5, declined 1. “If a man can drive through Christchurch without hitting anyone, he can drive anywhere,” said a member of the South Island Motor Union at last evening’s meeting. There was general support for a proposal that a “ safety first ” campaign should be held in the city for the education of both motorists and the public. The chairman said that children should be trained to look over their shoulders before stepping off a footpath. “ People should cross the road only at intersections,” said another delegate. It was decided that the union should get into touch with the Canterbury Automobile Association, 'the Motor Garage Proprietors’ Association and the Pioneer Sport s Club with a view to a “safety first” demonstration being given.
