DEATH OF POLAR EXPLORER.

WILLIAM SPIERS BRUCE. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. < able Association. (Received November 1, 8.5 a-tn.j LONDON, October 31. The death has occurred of Mr W. S. Bruce, the Polar explorer. (The late Mr William Spiers Bruce, LL.D., F-R.S.E., was born in Edinburgh in 1867 and was educated at the Edinburgh University. He secured numerous prizes and medals, amongst which were gold medallist of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, Royal Gold Medal (Patron’s) of the R.G.S., Neill prize and gold medallist of the Edinburgh R.S., and the Livingstone gold medal of the American G.S., and was an honorary member of the New Zealand Institute. His work in connection with various Polar and research expeditions is widely known, lie having been naturalist in the Scottish Antarctic Expedition, 1892-3, zoologist with the Jackson-Harmsworth Polar Expedition, 1896 and 1897, naturalist in Major Andrew Coats’s expedition to Novaya Zemiya, Wicke Islands and Barent’fi Sea, 1896; naturalist H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco's Expedition, Spitsbergen, 1888, 1889, and 1900; and leader of Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-4. He discovered 150 miles of the coast line of Antarctic, naming it Coats’s Land, and did a great deal of surveying and exploring work. He has also written many books on his studies.
