WOOLSTON’S RATE T 0 STAND.
CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSION. A discussion on Woolston’ 9 general rate took place in the City Council last night on a motion of which Councillor E. jVUCombs had given notice:—“ That the Minister of Internal Affairs be asked to grant facilities to the Christchurch City Council to cancel the present rate struck in Woolston and substitute rates levied in accordance with a determination of this council.” Councillor M’Combs said that had the rates not been struck by Woolston before amalgamation, and bad the city rates been in force, the saving to Woolston would have been £I6OO. She asked leave to move as an amendment to her motion that a joint committee should be appointed, consisting of Councillors Flesher, M’Kellar, Winsor, Martin. Hunter and M’Combs, to make an equitable adjustment of the rates in Woolston in conference with Woolston representatives. Councillor J. K. Archer opposed the motion, contending that Woolston should stand by their bargain. Woolston might have undertaken expenditure which the council would not approve of. Councillor A. M’Kellar said that the general rate in Woolston last year was £2428, and he could not imagine that £I6OO could be saved this year. At the close of a general discussion, the Deputy-Mayor (Councillor J. A. Flesher), in onposing the motion said that Woolston had not been playing the game with the city since the amalgamation, and the wav in which electrical stock had been sold below market rates was not creditable. Woolston would get much more than it was giving. Leave to amend the motion was refused on the voices. Councillor M’Comhs’g original motion was lost on the voices.
