CHATHAM ISLANDS.
[From Ocr. Cor respondent.] October 27. A hospital tax was levied on the island some five years ago by the Canterbury Hospital Board. A number paid it, but others were reluctant to do so as the island is unrepresented on the board. A meeting was held among the natives lately in which they agreed that they did not mind paying the tax if something were done in the way of a. local hospital, as people seriously ill could not he expected to take a, throe days’ rough sea journey to enter tho Christchurch Hospital. A concert was given by tho school ‘-hildren and teachers in farewell to Mr G'udsell. ex-chairman of the School Committee. An address composed by one of the pupils was read by the senior boy of the school. Mr Gudsell was presented with half-a-dozen stainless knives. During his short stay on the island Mr Gudsell took a keen interest in the progress of tho school and endeavoured to put the- committee on a good footing. The farmers have commenced tboir shearing. Some 2000 sheep are being shipped to the Addington markets by tho s.s. Ngatoro. The fishing works arc closing doAvn on November J. tor a couple of mouth'd.
