The home nursing class met last Wednesday in tho committee room of the Town Hall3 when a highly instructive lecture was given by the Lady District Superintendent on the care and nursing of the sick, ©specially that of a patient suffering fr om pneumonia. The next lecture will be give 11 on Wednesday, September 28. LIFE SAYING. Tho annual meeting will take place ou Wednesday next. Besides the annual report, urgent business will be discussed and all interested are urged to attend. COMPLEMENTARY SOCIAL, On Thursday evening a complimentary social was tendered iu the Town Hall to Air A. <J. Wilson, who-, after twelve years’ residence in the borough at Clifton, has gone to live at Cashmere. It. was one of the largest gatherings of its kind held in. the borough. The chair was occupied by the president of the Burgesses’ Association, Air G. F. Allen. During the evening a toast list was honoured, during which an opportunity was given for reference to Air Wilson’s connection with the several societies and clubs in the borough. Th© toast of tho guest of the evening w as proposed by the chairman. -Air Wilson had taken a leading part in the public lit© of Sum nor before and during the war and since then had been one of the promoters of the Horticultural Society. In beautifying work particularly and in the C.D.C. ho had earned the respect and good wshes of all. Air Allen, 011 behalf of those present, asked Air Wilson to accept a silver afternoon tea service and tray as a small token of th© appreciation of the Sumner people and as an earnest of their good wishes for Airs Wilson and the family during their residence at Cashmere. Air Wilson spoke feelingly of the companionship h© had always experienced amongst th© residents of tho borough. In thanking them for their gift he said that he and Mrs Wilson left tho borough with the kindest thoughts for all and always looked forward to a visit to Sumner with great pleasure and satisfaction. A number of musical and other items were contributed by Messrs F. O. Malpas, A. J. T. Withers, W. Bain, Alacfarlane, Beveridge, Hollow, W. F. Raphael and J. E. Stevens. CROQUET. Croquet enthusiasts will be glad to know that tho committee for that section of tlio club are already pushing matters ahead. At a meeting held this week it was decided to erect a number of sun shelters on tho court. This is a want that has been felt for a long time. Aire G. W. Smithson was elected captain and Airs W. Hudson Brown secretary. Votes of thanks to tli© retiring officers were passed to Airs J. AI. B. Crawford, Airs Bain and Mr E. A. Johnson. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. A committee meeting of tho above society was held this week. Air T. E. Whitfield presiding. A draft of the annual report was considered, and it was decided to hold the annual meeting on Monday. The bank balance was reported by tho treasurer, Mr O. AI. Roswell, to be £ls 14s lOd. FOR THE CHILDREN. Tho concert given in th© Town Hall for the funds of tho school was a great musical treat, and a thorough success. Items were splendidly "given by the Christchurch Banjo Band under Air Louis W. Bloy. Tho baud also brought its own company of artists, and ©very item was thoroughly enjoyed. A RETURN EFFORT. For a fortnight now a Sumner lady has been seeking signatures for the petition to be presented to Parliament in the interests of young girls. With untiring energy the borough has been canvassed, with the result that thirteen hundred signatures liave boon secured . * THE FORENSIC CLUB. The hnaJ meeting of the Forensio dub for this season was held in the supper room of the Town Hall this week, when a record gathering assembled to celebrate tho occasion. The Mayor, the Hon J. Barr, M.L.C.. occupied the chair. The function took tho form of a smoke concert, and a most enjoyable evening was spent, during which the cjub camo in fox- many congratulations front its friends, and had no little credit reflected upon its work by the able speeches contributed by some of it a members. LADIES’ RIFLE CLUB. Some excellent scores were made by members of the Sumner-Redclifl's Ladies* Rifle Club on Thursday. Alias Foster won the brooch with a score of 68, Miss Dorothy Keig Mrs Truscott’s prizie with 67 and Miss Merry the trophy sent in by the Misses Allen and Brown, with 66 Mrs O’Connor won the box of chocolates given for the highest score made by a Redcliffs resident, Miss Keig having already won a trophy. Next Thursday Miss Foster and Mrs GJaekin will shoot off for tho ehumpionship. x
