CLUB AKD BARRACKS GOSSIP. (Bv “ THE ORDERLY'.”) • There was another match for the Cadet shooting ehampfonshin at the King Edward Barracks on Wednesday, when Model Platoon were challenged for the third time bv the Cadet Band, whom they beat by 98 points to 76. The best individual scorer was Corporal A. Lewis. Model Platoon, with the maximum score of 20. The new Senior Cadet X.C.O.’s Class commenced last Saturday evening, when the number present was not so big as ivas anticipated. Those present, however, are verv keen and take a big interest in tlieir work. Fourteen X.C.O.’s and Cadets commenced the course. The examination -will bo held iu the second week in September. The Ladv God ley Challenge Cups for the best shots in the arious platoons are now’ being displayed in Messrs Stewart Dawson’s shop in High Street. Thev w ill be presented at. the King Edward Barracks at the parade of the Canterbury Cadet Battalion on* Julv 13. The battalion will parade at 7.30 and Colonel R. Young will present the cups at eight o’clock. Next week there will be no evening parades on the Monday and Thursday evenings, but it is hoped that there will be a, big muster at the battalion pprade on "Wednesday. Parents and friends of the Cadets are invited to be present. Tn addition to the presentation of Godlev Cups,, medals will bo presented to the holders of cups for the previous veal*. The possible score was 115. so it will bo seen that the shooting on the whole was very creditable. Cadet R. Hooper of 73 Company made within one of the possible. There was a tie for No. 13 Platoon’s Cup between Cadet. J. Sullivan and Sergeant S. E. Munday. This was fired off last Thursday. Sullivan winning. Nos, 4, 12 and 16 Platoons are tbe '‘Baby” Platoons, consisting of boys of fourteen years who have onlv one year’s training, so that their scores are very creditable. (

St Bede's College Cadets were visited by the Area Officer last week and appear to .be making good progress. It is hoped that some members of this unit will jgo in for the next examination for first appointment to commission. An n.c.o.’s class is to he started at the college in the near future. St Andrew's College Cadets were also visited during the week and are maintaining in their work the very high standard set by this unit. The band is making good headway, and it is hoped in the near future to have piper 6 as an alternative to the bugles. Already good progress bas been made by several of the buglers on pipe chanters.

A 10-pounder field gun has been issued to St Andrew’s College and next term it is intended to start, a number of the Cadets there on elementary artillery work. This has been done in several colleges in the South Island, amongst which Nelson College lias a most efficient Battery.

The Garrison Sports Association is making rapid strides in the preparation for its boxing tournament which will go held in King Edward Barracks on August II and 12. A poster has been distributed, which states that the tournament, has been divided into three series. One for Territorials is in four weights—feather, light, welter and middle: one for Secondary School Cadets in bantam, feather, welter and middle; and one for night parading Cadets in bantam, feather, welter and middle. The bouts are of three twominute rounds, and entries close on July 30. A good deal of interest, is being shown in the tournament and entries have already been received.

A football team is expected from Timaru Cadets to play against a team picked from the local Cadet Battalion’s teams. The match will he hold on the same day as the South African-Canter-bury match, and application has been made to have the Cadet match played at Lancaster Park as a curtain-raiser.

During August a Cadet hockey team hope to proceed to Timaru and Dunedin to play matches against Ca d rt. teams in those centres. Arrangements for the trip are now in hand, hut the definite dates have not yet been fixed.
