ASHBURTON COMPETITIONS. A good evening’s sport provided at Ashburton on Saturday night by the Ashburton Athletic Club, when the mid-Can-terbury amateur boxing championships were set down for decision. The entries numbered twenty-four, and no fewer than twenty bouts were put through within four hours. Among those present was the club’s president, Mr J. C. N. Grigg: also Mr Dick Arnst (sculling champion), the Hon W. Nqswertby, and Mr b. P. M'C'allum (Rhodes scholar), as tbe guests of the. club. Mr W. Page officiated as referee, and the judges wore Messrs H. R. C. M’Elre.a, K. J. O’Brien and H. J. C. Howell was the winner, but Griffiths was awarded a special prize for a particularly plucky display. Lightweight Competition—Hooper (Ashburton', Ost. Sib, beat Hewson (Lyndhurst), Ost 121 b; M’Aleer (Christchurch), Ost 10lb, heat M’ Donald (Dunedin), 9st ISlb. In the final, Hooper beat M’Aleer.
