AVON IMPROVEMENT.

CONTROLLING BODY ADVOCATED.

Tlie movement lor the improvement 'of the River Avon, winch, incidentally, is the home of the Brighton Power Boat Club, at last appears to be nearing issue, says a contributor to “ The Dominion Motor.” A new tone has entered into the discussions and one is encouraged to note that the time for temporising is generally recognised to be past. The proposal to form a separate Board of Control of the Avon has r»v o _ voiced a good deal of opposition., “ Too many local bodies already in Christchurch ” is the of the opponents. Air F Hone ll a member of the Lvtt-'dtou Harhwr Board. Kim'-rest-ed that the South Waimakariri Ri"er Beard mmht ta Ir e over improvement of the Avon, and the suggestion certainly merits careful consideration. Jt should bo borne in mind, however, that there is a wide difference between the work of of the Waimakariri River and improvement of the Avon. It ought to be clear to all who have gone into the matter that the fundamental necessity is some body, in possession of full executive powers in regard to improvement and maintenance of the Avon from its source to> its mouth. Whether that body shall be an addition to the bodies already existing, or whether some already constituted body takes tho matter in hand, is a matter less vital. Only a small executive should be necessary to carry on the work, and they should have power to call nnto consultation representatives of whatever local bodies were affected by their proposed activities. The matter must be tackled in no parochial spirit, neither must it be relegated to obscurity* The Avon should be developed to its fullest extent of beauty and usefulness for, and on behalf of, the people of Christchurch.
