The conference of miners and coal owners with Mr Lloyd George broke up at midnight, after two hours’ deliberations. without result. It will meet again this morning. Mr Lloyd George is willing to grant a subsidy, but insisted that the men should return to work immediately, and enter into an agreement to continue the present system for a definite period. The miners’ executive took the most awkward view of the Government statement. LONDON, June 27. An official statement regarding the coni conference reports that Mr Evan Williams informed the Premier that he had reached an agreement with the miners, which he hoped would to-mor-row be put into definite form, with all differences settled, but without Government assistance they could not apply the agreement to actual practice “ Therefore ’’ he said “we associate ourselves with the miners and ask the Government to reconsider the position regarding the ten millions. If the Government will help till the end of September, it is arranged that the agreement for the period beginning on October 1 will run definitelv for a year be subject thereafter to Ihree months’ notice, thus r>ot terminating before December 1922.” Mr Hodges confirmed the statement and added: “ To get the quickest resumption of work we must have the clearest statement to place before our people. If the ten millions is not restored the settlement outlined cannot he reached.” Mr T.lovd George said “ There is uni doubtedlv most serious opposition in Parliament to reconsideration of the ten mißions. T cannot give an answer to-night. I require fuller information regarding wages and districts.”
