OBITUARY.
ARTHUR ELLIS. The death is announced from horotueka, ivaiapoi, cf Mr Arthur Ellis, xn his eighty-ninth j-ear. Born in Ireland, the deceased was the second son of the late Captain Dixie Ellis, of the 49th Regiment, and was educated at King Williams’ College, Isle of Man. In 1855 he went to tho Crimea and joined the Turkish Contingent as secretary , to No. 2 Light Field Battery. In 1857" Mr Ellis left the army and with his brother, the late Mr Nicholas Ellis came to New Zealand in the ship Alma.. They settled in Canterbury, and for the first few years of their colonial experience were engaged in farming. Subsequently they took the Hoon Hay grey stone quarries, and successfully worked them for some years. The stone for the Bank of Now Zealand, the Bank of Australasia and the Government Buildings, as well as for a great many other buildings of note supplied to them. After relinquishing the quarries Air Ellis was engaged in the w-00l business. For some years he lived a life of retirement at Korotueka, Kaiapoi, where he died. He married in 1861 Miss Charlotte Nevell, who died in 1888. He leaves a family of four sons and three daughters.
