CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION, NEW RULES ON MAY 28. The Executive Committee of tbe Canterbury Rugby Union rust last evening, Mr S. F. Wilson presiding. On tlae motion of Mr Wilson, it was agreed to bring tbo new rules into operation on May 28. Mr Wilson said that tho new rule j books had been received. Wellington, would play under Ihe new rules on Saturday. Otago aud Wanganui were already playing under Mr W. B. Howell reported th© Riecarfon B team for disorderly conduct and continual appealing. He explained the circumstance?. It. was decided to ask the Riccarton Club for an explanation, and to request the captain and two plaj ers whose names vrero given to attend the next meeting of the executive. It was decided to caution a. member of the North Canterbury Club who had been reported by the referee for raising hie barms in the match against Lyttelton. Tho ’Varsity Club were granted permission to default in the senior grade ou May 21 and 28 and June 4 and 12, and to play only one junior team and one third grade team on those dates. The secretary of the club wrou. stating that, six or seven senior players would bo absent from New Zealand owing to the Australian tour, and that other players would be away on vacation. The executive resolved to recommend the North Canterbury Club to alter ita name. »3 the club is now really a Rangiora borough club. The question of appointing a. delegate to s meeting of the Hurunui sub-union on May 28 was held over. The Building Sub-committee recommended that the dressing sheds at the new training area, in Hagley Dark should not be erected until next season, owing to the high price of timber and tc other reasons. Tbe ground eeemed to bo satisfactory- in the main, and, if clubs used it. he believed the standard of pla,v would improve considerably. Mr Wilson said that the plan of the Fbeds had been approved by tbe Domain Board. The recommendation was adopted. It was decided to hold an official ” switching-on at which members of the City Council and the Domains Board would be present. It was resolved that, the clubs should be asked to nominate third grade selectors before Tuesday. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. The match Canterbury v. Taranaki will bo played at Hawera on Wednesday, August Z, instead of on August 4. It was agreed that either August 27 or September it would suit a-s the date for tho match Canterbury v. Southland, to bo played ir* Ch ristch u rcli. The ’Wellington Union wrote, suggesting that the match. Canterbury v. Wellington, t'-> be plaved, in Wellington on August 33, should be a Kanfurly Shield match, provided Canterbury were the "holders on that date. Tt was decided to reply that Canterbury had no intention of challenging for the shield i til is year. Mr Wilson said that at the annual meet- : ing of the New Zealand Union it had been Tirtually agreed that there should be .no challenges for t.ho Ranfurly Shield this year on account of tbe South African team’s visit. While the Southland team was touring, three or four of their best players might be playing with, the New Zealand team. August 33 was suggested a dote for matches in Christchurch against Wellington Second and Third Grade teams. Tho Otago Union wrote, approving or September 30 the date for the match against Otago in Dunedin. THE ATTKEN BENEFIT. A DOUBLE PROGRAMME. Final arrangements for the Ait-keu benefit i matches were made last, evening by the Executive Committee of tlie Canterbury ltugby Union. A deputation from the Canterbury Rugby Footba.ll League waited ou the executive, and suggested that, a Senior League match. Sydenham v. Addington, should be played at Lancaster Park on Saturday, as well as the Rugby Union -matches already arranged. The. league’s only ground iu the city was Sydenham Park, which was not very suitable. That, was why they wished to work in conjunction with the Rugby Union. A double programme would mean n larger attendance. Mr S. F. Wilson said that this was th© first timo the suggestion had conic before the union. The executive would consider the request. a.nd lie hoped their reply would be j favourable. When th® deputation had withdrawn. members of the union executive discussed the question of making suitable arrangements. The Rugbv matches already set down for Lancaster Park were:—Oval, 1.30 p.w.. High School Old Boys v. Sydenham ; 3 p.m., Linwood v. Atarist-s; couth ground, 3 p.m., ’Varsity v. Christchurch; west ground. 3 p.m.. Albion v. Merivale. The New Zealaml Rugby League to-night decided the itinerary for the tour of New Zealand by a Queensland team as follows : Play Auckland, July 23; South Auckland, July 27; New Zealand, July 30; Native team, August 3: Now Zealand, August 6; Hawke's Bar, August 10; Wellington, August 13; West Coast. August 17; Canterbury, August, 20. The visiters may also play another match against New Zealand, or against a Wellington and Wanganui combined ieam. The New Zealand team to tour Australia la to be selected within the next- few days.
