CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. £Pkr Press Association-! WELLINGTON. May 11. At the conference of technical education directors Mr J. Ca ugh ley. Director of Education, paid a high tribute to the work ol the director?- and colleges and gave an assurance of the Department's co-operation. He commented on the great improvements during the past twelve months. He paid that novhere else in the world were facilities offered bo freely or bo widely for technical education as in New Zealand. Further extension was needed to meet the demands of a modern age. On. the motion of Air C. 11. Ooie. chairman of the Technical Oolltege Board of Governors, Christchurch, the conference congratulated Mr Caughley on his appointment and expressed entiro confidence in the future of technical education in his hands. TEACHERS INTERVIEW MINISTER. [Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, May 11. Representatives of the Technical School Teachers’ Association waited on the Minister of Education, the Hon C. J. Pair, with regard to the grading scheme and other matters. The speakers made it plain that they approved of the spirit of the principle of the ne.v grading regulations, but desired to see certain anomalies removed relating principally, to qualifications in grading and hours of work. The deputation urged that there should be no reduction in expenditure on education, particularly the technical branch. The Minister expressed aporeciation of the approval shown of the effort made to place technical school teachers on a better and more definite basis. Hie desire was to see the regulations gradually improved and anomalies removed. Ho wished to see the trading officers adopt a benevolent attitude, as the scheme was just being started, especially with regard to old teachers.
