Thousands of compositors and job printers throughout the country have struck in an effort to secure a fortyfour hour week. The leaders of the International Typographical Union declare that the 1919 contract with the employers made tho forty-four hour week and an increased wage scale effective as from May 1. The employers declare they cannot reduce working hours and maintain tho present wage level. Numerous papers have suspended publication. Some are resorting to the photograph engraving process. Others are publishing with non-union workers. Several western proprietors yielded to the men’s demands.
