SNOW ON THE ALPS.

SEASON’S FIRST MANTLE.

Daylight revealed that the Southern Alps had received overnight their first mantle of snow for the year. The summits were in dazzling white, but the snow did not -extend far down the sides. A cold snap is being experienced, much to the discomfort of people who dress for the usually mild weather of February. This morning the weather was almost wintry, a southerly breeze blowing up coldly. It is remarked that the weather has never been really settled since the dry spell ended early in January.
