SHEEPOWNERS’ UNION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union met on Tuesday, present—Messrs D. A Rutherford (president) H. D. Acland, W. W. M’Rae, E- Hay, K. M. D. Morten,' 1.-. R. C. Macfarlane, T>. TV. Westenra, G. Fulton, H. Acton-Adams, N. D. Campbell, S. U. Rutherford, and W. Hanmer-Atkinson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs R Sefh-Smitli, G. Murray, T. Masefield, G. O. Rutherford and M. Bothell. A letter was received from tbe Prime Minister in answer to representations from Hie union in connection with the decontrol of \>riees on New Zealand meat at. Home. Air Massey stated that a strongly-worded cable regarding this matter had been dispatched to the Imperial authorities and further representations had been made to the Government at Home on receipt of the union’s letter on the matter, but no reply had yet been ceivedMr B. Seth-Smith wrote resigning bis position as the union’s representative on the Technical College Board of Governors and as a member of the union executive on account of Iris proceeding to England, next month. On the motion of Mr Rutherford, seconded by Air Morten, Air Seth-Smith’s resignation was accepted with regret and eulogistic reference was made to his services to the union during the period of bis representation in the interests of the pastoral industry on the College Board. A letter was received from the Ashburton Technical College asking for the union’s support to meet the expenses of the shearing classes conducted by the school. On the motion of Mr Rutherford, seconded by Mr Westenra, a sum of £lO was authorised to be paid ns a donation towards the cost of these classes. The president went very fully into the position of the carry-over wool held by the Imperial Government, and stated that in his opinion it was vitally important that this wool should bo held firmly so that the current clips would be enabled to get the right of way to the market. He stated that there was every reason to believe that this would be accomplished, and said that in his opinion if this were done, it would go far towards establishing the. position regarding wool to-day. The question of a direct representation of New Zealand producers at Home was raised, and after a full discussion Mr E. Hay moved “that a representative of New Zealand producers be appointed at Home, and that it be a recommendation to the Produce Committee at its next meeting to pro&s this matter with the New Zealand Government*.” The motion was seconded by Mr "W. Hanmer-Atkinson and carried. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr R. M. Morton, Mr L. R. C. Macrarlane was appointed tbe union’s representative on the Technical College i Board of Governors for the remainder of the year. A letter was received from the Graziers’ Association in New South Wales, asking for information as to the best means for inaugurating shearing classes in the various centres of traliaThe secretary was instructed to forward the information required. Letters were received from the secretary of the Pelorus Sounds Farmers’ Union and Mr J. Todhunter detailing suggested schemes for the disposal of New Zealand wool. The letters were received, the president stating that in view of the negotiations going forward at present it would not bo advisable to proceed further with these matters, as suggested, at this stage.
