A telegram from Salem, Oregon, states that Governor Olieott, in a message to the. Legislature, said that proper legislation should be employed to curb the growth of the Japanese colony in Oregon- ** The Japanese,"’ he said, arc a race of high culture, but we cannot assimilate them, and they cannot assimilate us. I would live in peace, amity and concord with them, but it would be a peace of amity and concord which extended the hand of friendship : across the sea.”
