CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday evening, Mr W- M. Tyers (president) in the chair. The Importers’ Sectional Committee reported that a number of replies had been received to the circular asking for suggestions regarding Customs Tariff revision, and it was proposed to hold a joint meeting of the Importers’ and Manufacturers’ Committees to consider ;he question. The report of the committee appointed to consider the Port Christchurch and Tunnel schemes was received, and it was resolved to print it and distribute it to members for consideration ai the next quarterly meeting Correspondence was. received from the Java Ships’ Committee with reference to guarantee by the bank in connection with bills of lading for cargo in the German steamers “ Stoiberg ” and “ Lubeck.” The matter was re- i fei red -• o the Importers’ Sectional Committee i > iep->rt to next meeting. The General Manager of Railways, having i eon asked to endeavour to arrange for a temporary central booking office at the Parcels Post Office, a Teply was received that the Post Office authorities could not spare any of the space. It, was decided to ask co-operation of the Progress League in endeavouring to arrange for a central railway booking office. A letter was received from Mr J. D. Lynch. Greymouth, asking the co-opera-tion of the chamber in a suggestion that the Public "Works Department should be asked to run passenger trains through the Arthur’s Pass It was decided that it was inexpedient to make the request, as it might possibly lead to delay in the completion of the tunnel. The Soldiers’ Mothers’ League, Auckland, forwarded a resolution favouring a Victory Jiigkv ay as a memorial to fallen soldiers.—Received. The New Zealand Welfare League wro.Lc asking the chamber to protest against the proposed New Zealand Cooperative Stevedoring Association. It was decided to Teplv that it was outside the functions of th? chamber to interfere with, the relations between employer and employee, and the chamber did not feel justified in expressing any opinion on the suggested scheme. Tne Department of Industries and Commerce forwarded copy of letter to the Governor-General with reference to the second annual fair to be held at Bandoond. Java, from September 19 to October” 9 next. Mr W. J. Gibbs, Te Aroha, wrote suggesting the formation of a road to the Maruia Hot, Springs, fifty-nine miles Iron: Culverden. The springs were stated to have excellent curative properties for rheumatism and kindred diseases. 7t was decided to refer the matter to the Progress League with a view of that body taking it up The Progress League wrote stating ihe arrangements for a visit to Lake Coleridge with the Minister for Public W6i ks. The president, vice-president and ; secretary were appointed to represent the chamber on the occasion, members of the chamber to be asked to attend also. A letter was received from the manager of the Moving Picture Exhibition of British Industries, stating that tli© New Zealand itinerary would be undertaken in February and March,* and ! asking for paiuonage and assistance in arranging for publicity 4 invitations, etc.
