ATHLETICS.
I NOTES ON EVENTS, (By “ SP.RINTEB.”) The Christmas holidays offer a number of attractive meetings to athletes who have the time and money to go afield for their sport. On Boxing' Day tho Wellington Calbdonian. Society is holding s big meeting, whilst there is a meeting at Timar’u on New Year’s Day. Three amateur races will be run at the North Brighton Gala on Boxiii" Day. V Three Christchurch “cracks” are going north for the W ollington nieetinoon Boxing Day. C. IT. Tavlor, C. At. Walden and J. M. P.-Garrick will make up a team that will take a lot of heating. Hie two last named, I understand, are on good marks, but Taylor is sure to he n good wav back. Sid Cox, who is putting in a lot of time trainHie three, may possibly accompany Christchurch will probably be represented at Timaru. ' ■ ♦ # Hie races at Brighton should attract most of the runners who will he in conn for Christina,-., V* This evenings meeting at Lancaster ocn^j' 9 i ’’A a 220 yds handicap, MMyds handicap, putting the shot bandicap and 100 yds handicap for bova under sixteen. The 220 yds and SSOvds riiould bring out good fields. H. 5.0.8. Club is in charge of flic meeting. Last week’s meeting at Lancaster 1 ark was notable for the fine run which . H. Tsi .or made m the 440 yds handiC 'M J - . starting from Bvds (virtual !///,) Taylor conceded the limit man /}(ls, and no had twenty-three men to pass. For the first 200 yds he ran at the tail end of the field, and 'then came round like a streak of lightning mi the outside of the track, passing the field and winning as he liked. His time was 63sec, and as he had the outside of the track and was easing up at the finish this was good time. I should not ho at all surprised to see Taylor go near to the New Zealand record for'44oyds tins vear. The prex sent record is 49 I-oseo. established hv the American, G. L. Parker, in 1913." m • # The 100 yds handicap last Tuesday was marred hy whaf seemed to be two errors m judging. In the first heat the fudges placing was; 'W. J. Batstone Qlyds) 1. C. H. Goodman (Gvds) 3, i j -5 a^ en M.vds) 3. Hie' writer placed Walden first, Goodman second and Batstone third, and this was the Placing of several others at' the tape. In Hie final Batstone won decisively, but Goodman, who was placed second, appeared to lie beaten bv M. A. M’Dona!d. , V 0.M.. Walden has been unfortunate ,m two races lately. On one occasion he was caught napping at the start, and qn Tuesday he was unlucky in not catching the judge’s eye. He is in good trim ilist now and should be hard to beat at Wellington, f W## New Zealand’s representatives have returned home, “bringing with them pleasant memories of their trip. • Despite many set-backs. the team did well and is to be congratulated on its fine sLowing. It is to bo hoped that the lessons learned this year will not bo forgotten when the next Olympiad comes along m 1924. Preparations shoiUd be made long before tffohJS Games arc due, and not at the last moment, as was the case this year. The team winch leaves New Zealand for tho next Games will prr.h-ably be larger," and t it is to be successful if, will have to IS SJLf**'-"* H ’“
