DEFENCE NOTES.

GOSSIP FROM THE BARRACKS. (By “ THE ORDERLY”) All military training hos now ceased for Christmas. The Territorials will resume training on January 17 and the Senioc Cadets will start again on January 31. Tho military year commences about July, when transfers from Senior Cadets to Territorials take place. The first six months of the present military year—so far as Christchurch is concern-ed—-has been very much broken up and it is to be hoped that during the second part of the year those in charge of training will suffer from much Jess interference. The utilisation of the King Edward Barracks for various purposes outside of military training has caused several breaks in the programme of training and the sooner some othei place is found in which to hold these functions the bet ter it will be. Under the present circumstances it cannot, be expected that training can be carried out properly, and it is not fair to the instructors or to the trainees to expect them to get through tho course of training in a satisfactory manner. The course oF training at Trentham which will commence on January 6 will have a full quota from the Christchurch secondary schools. The numbers going from klm various schools are as follow. Christ’s College, 4 for musketry; St Andrew’s College, 3 for musketry, 4 lor < physical training, 6 for infantry training; West Christchurch District High School, 1 for musketry and 6 for physical_ training. A big ‘number of applications had to be turned down. Boys’ High School candidates will attend the course at Trentham in May, whilst boys from the Technical College will go to tho Burnham camp, where a general course of training will be given, instead of special courses, as at Trentham. V The Canterbury Regiment History is ready for publication now with the exception of the maps. The hook Is printed, and as soon as the. maps come from Wellington it will he put on sale. *♦* St Andrew’s College will probably hold a barracks at tho school in February. There are some very keen cadets College, and 2 officers and 13 JS.C.O.’s are going into camp at Trentham on January 6. • » ’The programme of events in the tournament next week between the visitors from Wellington and the local Cadets has been altered, in that the swimming wull take place at the Christ’s College baths, and the tennis will probably be played _ at. the. Canterbury College courts, in Hagley Park. The visiting Cadets will be billeted at the barracks, and will have, their meals at the \.iM.C.A. Should tho weather remain as line as it is at present, their stay hero should prove, most enjoyable. Tho Tournament is interesting, Vs it is the first of its kind tried here.
